Temple Israel, Hillbrow

Temple Israel, Hillbrow, built in 1936, is Johannesburg’s oldest Progressive Jewish synagogue and the mother shul of the city’s Reform Congregation. Designed by Hermann Kallenbach in Art Deco style, it features wood panelling, parquet floors, and a striking bimah with gold columns. Through projects like the M.C. Weiler School and youth programs, it remains a beacon of faith and community, embodying the Jewish principle of mitzvah – good deeds – and stands as a proposed provincial heritage site.
