Youth Dance Collaboration Lights up Joburg Theatre

The Johannesburg Youth Ballet and the National School of the Arts have come together in a collaborative season of youth dance, showcasing a range of styles and talents, offering a platform for young dancers to express their creativity and work together.

With funding from the National Arts Council and supported by Joburg Theatre, the Johannesburg Youth Ballet (JYB) and the National School of the Arts (NSA) have joined forces to create a production that embodies the spirit of symbiosis – the harmonious coexistence of diverse elements.

The NSA and the JYB share a history and objectives in consistently nurturing and finding opportunities for young dancers to showcase their proficiency and artistry.

“Symbiosis not only showcases the talent of young dancers but also the rich skills of young South African choreographers,” says Mark Hawkins, the current Artistic Director of the JYB.

Symbiosis is being staged at the Lesedi Theatre at the Joburg Theatre from 1 to 4 August 2024. The Lesedi Theatre is known for its vibrant and engaging performances.

“We are excited to announce the joint season of the JYB and the NSA. These two esteemed institutions have cultivated a strong artistic partnership for 46 years, producing highly praised dancers and choreographers,” says Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, CEO of Joburg City Theatres.

She highlights that Dance Spectrum Symbiosis promises to captivate audiences with a diverse range of dance styles, including romantic ballet showcased in the adaptation of Les Sylphides, contemporary dance, Spanish, Hip Hop, and an innovative “amaballet” influenced by the popular Amapiano music.

“Amapiano music has gained international popularity due to its irresistible rhythms, melodic piano tunes, and rhythmic percussion,” adds Nduneni-Ngema.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with the Johannesburg Youth Ballet on this exciting project. Having three young external choreographers who possess extensive experience on both the local and international dance scenes makes this season particularly exciting. Expect fresh ideas and bold voices in Symbiosis and a relevant South African youth dance showcase. We can’t wait to share it with audiences,” says NSA educator, choreographer, and JYB alum Yusuf Thomas.

Tickets are available through WebTickets, priced at R150 and R100 for students. Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of young people and youth dance in South Africa.
