Women’s health at centre of new partnership between the City and Harpic

he Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, Cllr Ashley Sauls 1, in partnership with Harpic Hygiene, launched the for Her Project in Klipfontein today, 26 May 2022.
The project is a community-based initiative and Harpic Hygiene is focused on restoring broken public toilets in high density communities, and where possible build new women-friendly toilets.
Strides have been made in the City of Johannesburg to ensure that basic sanitation is available to all, however, millions of women still find themselves dreading to use public or shared toilets. This is why Harpic and the City of Joburg have partnered to provide better hygiene and sanitation for women and children.
Many women who live in high density areas such as squatter camps or backroom rentals don’t have access to dignified, hygienic and safe toilets and they find themselves being prone to urinary tract infections.
“The city recognises the impact that a project of this nature has on women in so many ways.  Firstly, it helps women prevent infections that can arise from poor facilities. This often comes at a cost to families as a whole and also to healthcare facilities. So the preventative impact of this facility is potentially enormous,” said MMC Sauls 1.
Harpic will provide cleaning products to keep the toilet facilities clean. To further empower the residents, the programme will work with the City’s Health Department to conduct an educational drive in the community and its surrounding areas.
