Winter’s chill won’t stop the splash

As the 2023–2024 swimming season wraps up in Johannesburg, a wave of excitement is building for winter thanks to a new option for dedicated swimmers. Ephraim Ramosweu, the City’s assistant director for sport and recreation, says the Pimville Swimming Pool, known for its heated facilities, will be open for winter swimming lessons. This exciting alternative allows swimmers to keep the momentum going despite the cooler months. While acknowledging the challenges of load shedding and load reduction, Ramosweu encourages swimmers eager to get back in the water to explore the Pimville option. Rapelang Simente, a regular at Dobsonville Swimming Pool, expressed his enthusiasm for winter swimming. “Introducing young learners to a heated pool is a fantastic opportunity. They’ll have a blast, and this experience will build their confidence and resilience,” says Simente.

These winter lessons go beyond just fun, adds Zanele Radebe, Principal of Freedom Learning Centre, a local Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) who sees the programme as a valuable tool for holistic development.

“Providing children with diverse learning opportunities, including winter swimming, fosters not only physical strength but also mental well-being. It’s about nurturing well-rounded individuals,” Radebe says.

She says affording the community of Pimville the option of winter swimming is an invaluable exercise.

“It’s not just about entertainment; it’s about educating our children in both mind and body. Seeing our kids engage in various sports and challenge each other brings us immense joy,” Radebe says, emphasising that children learn best through play.

Promise Nxolo, a parent, highlights the programme’s importance for safety and accessibility within Black communities.

“Many children lack access to swimming pools and lessons, putting them at risk of drowning. Private lessons are often out of reach, and many households don’t have pools. This initiative provides a lifeline for our children, ensuring their safety and well-being,” Nxolo explains.

Winter swimming offers unique benefits, including building strength, confidence, and the ability to navigate challenges.

Despite potential obstacles, these programmes empower children to thrive year-round.
