The 2025 Scape Awards of Excellence are among the country’s most prestigious design and architecture honours, celebrating outstanding achievements across architecture, interior design, and product design. The gala event took place on 10 October 2025 in Cape Town. This year’s judging panel comprised a global mix of esteemed architects, designers, and thought leaders who bring an impartial and international perspective to the awards.
Delivered by the JDA on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Social Development, the centre is a multi-purpose public facility on the Empire–Perth Corridor in Westbury. Designed by Ntsika Architects, it stands as a beacon of sustainable architecture and social innovation.
The project transformed an ageing community facility into a modern and inclusive hub that caters to early childhood development, senior citizen care, recreation, and small business activity. Its design features locally sourced materials, a vibrant courtyard, solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, and a signature green wall that invites community participation in urban greening.
“The recognition of the Westbury Centre as flagship project of the decade is a tremendous honour for the City of Johannesburg and a reflection of how thoughtful design and community collaboration can drive urban transformation,” said JDA CEO Themba Mathibe.
The nomination reinforces the JDA’s commitment to placemaking and sustainable development, showcasing how integrated design can strengthen social cohesion and improve quality of life in Johannesburg’s communities.
