Visually impaired Joburg residents experience City’s rich tourism offerings

As part of the Transport Month programme, Blind SA stakeholders were recently treated to an exclusive Green Tour in a partnership between Joburg Tourism and the Transport Department.

The tour made two stops along the way, one at the Johannesburg Zoo and Zoo Lake and one at the extensive Ditsong Museum of Military History.

The purpose of this partnership was to give our blind and visually impaired people an opportunity to experience the iconic red bus and experience Joburg’s rich tourism offerings.

For 26-year-old Khanyi Nkosi, being on the two-hour journey was an exciting first-time experience that will forever be memorable to her.

“I enjoyed being on the bus because I got to visit some of Johannesburg’s iconic tourist attractions and learn more about the rich history of each of the sites,” said Nkosi.

The transport services have evolved over the years, boasting diverse modes of transport such as the Red City Sightseeing Bus, an open-top, hop-on hop-off bus that affords tourist and residents an opportunity to zoom around many of the city’s biggest sights in one day, accompanied by an insightful audio guide.

Through the October Transport Month, the City continued to raise awareness on the relationship between transport and tourism and the fundamental benefits that tourism brings to the economy. It was also an opportunity to highlight key milestones achieved on improving safety and reliability across all modes of transport and more affordable, accessible, and reliable transport.
