Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg, who clinched the Joburg’s prestigious cycle challenge at Africa’s Calabash in Nasrec on Sunday, 20 November, rode in memory of his late father. He crossed the finish line after a gruelling 97km route in two hours and 10 minutes, followed by Marc Pritzen and mountain biker Gert Heyns on second and third places respectively.
“It’s a very special win for me today as I was riding in memory of my late father and I am very excited that I won.
Thanks to my team and the spectators who kept cheering us up along the route,” said Janse van Rensburg.
In the women’s race, Vera Looser was crowned the winner for elite ladies, followed by Tiffany Keep in second and Kim le Court in third place.
The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Mpho Phalatse, thanked City departments and entities for ensuring the safety of cyclists and residents along the route.
“We deployed the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), and together with the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport to enforce total road closures throughout portions of the route from 03:00 to 17:00 to safeguard the safety of both bikers and residents,” said Mayor Phalatse.
