Thirty-Four Years of Strength: Muller’s Fruitful Journey at Joburg Market

Cornely Muller, a 54-year-old powerhouse, is one of the longest-serving female employees at the Joburg Market. With a career spanning over 34 years, Cornely has not only overcome the challenges of a male-dominated industry but has also risen to become a Hall Inspector, overseeing crucial operations with unmatched expertise and determination.

Muller’s remarkable journey began in 1990 when, at just 20 years old, she joined the Joburg Market as a booking clerk for the now-defunct Libertus Market Agency. The market’s fast-paced environment was an eye-opener for young Muller, but she quickly proved her determination. After seven years with Libertus, she moved to Execu-Fruit Market Agency, where she spent a decade as a saleswoman.

In 2007, seizing an opportunity to advance, Muller took on the role of Consignment Control Officer at Joburg Market, laying the groundwork for her current position as a Hall Inspector in the Potato Hall. Here, she is responsible for stock control, ensuring adherence to rigorous standard operating procedures, and maintaining hygiene standards on the market agents’ sales floor.

“Navigating a male-dominated environment was not easy, but my strength and resilience were amplified by a male mentor who empowered me early in my career. He not only taught me essential computer skills but also encouraged me to thrive in my journey at the market. Today, I believe I am a master of my craft,” she said.

Muller’s dedication is fuelled by the strong bonds she shares with her colleagues, whom she considers family. Her sense of belonging and purpose has kept her motivated through the years, even as the market underwent significant changes in operations, management, and infrastructure.

“My colleagues feel like family. They make it so easy for me to wake up and come to work. Despite the challenges and changes, I am still optimistic about the market’s future,” she added.

Muller encourages young female employees to be bold, assertive, and unafraid to take up space in the market. She believes in the immense strength and capability of women, urging them to pursue their ambitions with confidence and tenacity.
