Celebrating its 25th year as a cultural treasure in Sandton, Theatre on the Square is set to dazzle audiences with a dynamic line-up of performances throughout the first quarter of 2024. Nestled in the heart of Nelson Mandela Square, this iconic venue promises a cultural feast featuring an array of proudly South African productions, from captivating plays and musicals to side-splitting comedies, youth theatre, jazz, and daytime classical lunch-hour concerts.

Daphne Kuhn, the producer, and owner of Theatre on the Square, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating: “Sandton’s first theatre has a bumper year ahead of theatre productions and concerts – all proudly South African.”
Renowned for its award-winning productions and commitment to showcasing new South African works, the theatre’s diverse offerings include educational programmes ensuring a rich and engaging experience for visitors.
Here’s a sneak peek at the enticing line-up from February to May 2024:
- Spanish Steps (13 – 24 February): A ‘coming-of-middle-age’ comedy drama that unfolds in a basement, bringing together two unlikely companions facing the prospect of spending an unforeseeable future in close quarters. The play explores the dynamics as tensions rise, leaving audiences wondering if they will push each other over the edge or help each other become unstuck.
- Joburg Film Festival (26 February – 3 March): Making a triumphant return, the festival will focus on curating and showcasing African and International films, serving as a hub for both youth and filmmakers.
- ÎLE (26 March – 6 April): Sophie Joans brings her acclaimed solo show to Joburg, a captivating journey that delves into family, dark histories, and the comedic chaos that arises when people linger in one place for too long, all set against the backdrop of a tropical paradise.
- Mommy’s Boy (7-11 May): Offering a night of laughter, South African comedic sensation Siv Ngesi takes the stage with his first-ever stand-up comedy show at Theatre on the Square.
In addition to these must-see shows, the theatre introduces the Classical Music Concert series for the first quarter of the year, featuring:
- Soweto Opera Quadro (2 February): Led by Edward Mabunda, this brilliant quadro presents a repertoire of uplifting songs with an unusual mix of three tenors and a baritone.
- Ziza Muftic Trio (9 February): Jazz enthusiasts will enjoy the unique blend of sound from this renowned jazz vocalist, pianist, and composer, featuring Balkan and European Folk Songs, American, and South African Jazz arrangements.
- Cherry Pill (8 March): The popular violin and guitar duo, featuring violinist Kristel Birkholtz and guitarist Rory Gaddin, promise to uplift and entertain. World Art Day Concert (5 April): Cellist Berthine van Schoor, accompanied by Annalien Ball on the piano, commemorates World Art Day through the magic of their interesting music choices.
All concerts take place on Friday afternoons at 13:00, with tickets available an hour before at the theatre box office. Seats are unreserved, so early arrival is recommended to secure the perfect spot.
