The Official Unveiling of Reverend Modise’s Heritage Site

On a cold, windy morning, the vibrant Meadowlands community and devoted congregants gathered at Tswelelang Higher Primary School. The air was filled with anticipation, soulful melodies, and dance as they prepared to honour the past and celebrate a significant milestone.

The occasion was the official unveiling of the internationally recognised Blue Heritage Plaque, in partnership with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation. This plaque commemorated the historical importance of the late Reverend Frederick Samuel Modise’s house, located at No. 1 Reverend Frederick Samuel Modise Road, Meadowlands, Soweto.

Vuyisile Mshudulu, Director of Arts, Culture, and Heritage for the City of Johannesburg, delivered a captivating historical narrative. He passionately described the programme’s aim to recognise the heritage value of Reverend Frederick Samuel Modise’s house, which had become a beacon of unity and hope for the Black community.

The day was filled with joy and pride, particularly for Councillor Lubabalo Magwentshu, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development. Cllr Magwentshu expressed his deep honour in unveiling the Heritage Plaque, a symbol of the city’s rich and complex history.

He highlighted the house’s transformation from a relocation centre during the forced removals from Sophiatown (1955-1961) to the birthplace of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC), founded by Reverend Modise. Despite its painful past, the house stood as a testament to hope, resilience, faith, and community.

The atmosphere was electric as Ntate TS ‘The Comforter’ Modise and his entourage departed for the official unveiling of the plaque. Among the attendees were International Holiness Church leadership, local royals, officials, distinguished guests, community members, and honoured elders. The ceremony marked a significant chapter in Meadowlands’ history, honouring the legacy of unity and healing represented by the Modise family.

The Meadowlands community and congregants witnessed this momentous event, their presence affirming the belief that seeing is believing. Together, they celebrated a day that acknowledged their heritage, resilience, and the enduring power of community.
