Sunshine fills Modderfontein as spectators flock to Joburg Ladies Open

With the sun blazing down on the picturesque Modderfontein Golf Course, enthusiastic crowds turned out in force for day three of the Joburg Ladies Open. This prestigious international tournament, co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour, sees over 60 golfers vying for their share of the €300,000 prize purse. Spectators, armed with sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats, eagerly followed their golfing heroes around the course on Saturday, 20 April. For some, the day wasn’t just about the competition. The vibrant spectators’ village offered a welcome respite, with a variety of small businesses showcasing their culinary delights. From enticing curry and sizzling braai (barbecue) fare to classic hot dogs, there was something to tantalise every tastebud. Drysdale’s Distillery also ensured thirst was quenched with their selection of beverages.

Terry Gamede, a lucky VIP ticket winner through a social media competition, couldn’t contain her excitement. “The treatment has been fantastic so far,” Gamede beamed. “I feel like a star. I play golf recreationally, and getting these VIP tickets is the icing on the cake. Today, I’m firmly behind Nadia van der Westhuizen.”

First-time attendee Nokuthula Zuntu, enjoying the day with friends, admitted to being a golf novice.

“We’re not familiar with the sport, but the chance to explore the course and soak up the atmosphere at the village is fantastic,” Zuntu enthused.

Bosele Teke, a burgeoning golf enthusiast, praised the City of Johannesburg for hosting such a prestigious event. “The accessibility is amazing; free entry is a major plus. This is my first live tournament, and witnessing these talented golfers in action is truly inspiring,” Teke said.

Joining the throngs of spectators was Lizanne Cronje, who came with her siblings. “We’re a whole family outing today, celebrating my dad’s birthday,” Cronje explained. “He’s a huge golf fan, and this is the perfect way to mark the occasion.”

The Joburg Ladies Open International Golf Tournament culminates tomorrow, Sunday, 21 April.
