Stakeholders unite to tackle impact of climate change on refugees

The City’s Migration Sub-Unit within the Social Development Department has officially launched its Climate Change Response for Migrants, Refugees, and Internally Displaced Persons project. The project is aimed at addressing the urgent needs of migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The atmosphere at the Joburg Theatre was charged with a sense of purpose and hope as internal and external stakeholders came together in search of sustainable solutions for those profoundly affected by the climate crisis. Stakeholders included the City’s Food Resilience Unit, International Organisation for Migration, African Migrant Women’s Voices, Africa Integrated Platform, Church World Service and others brought their diverse expertise and resources to the table too address complex challenges posed by climate change among migrants, refugees and IDPs in the City.

Tinashe Mushayanyama, the Unit Head of the Policy Unit, spoke about the critical issues affecting the City, including the climate crisis, rising food prices, and international conflicts which negatively impact food security.

He emphasised the need for innovation and local food production to achieve food security and sustainable development.

“By taking ownership of food production, the City of Johannesburg can reduce its reliance on external assistance and improve the resilience of its food systems,” said Mushayanyama.

Robinson Sathekge, the Head of the Migration Unit, said this project could make a significant difference in ensuring a more secure and sustainable future for migrants, refugees and IDPs.

He emphasised the importance of this collaborative effort and the role of stakeholders in achieving the project’s goals, which include making an impact on the lives of those who have been displaced or affected by the climate crisis.
