The City of Johannesburg is preparing to take centre stage on the global platform as it hosts the second African Forum on Urban Forests (AFUF) from 18 to 21 March 2025. This landmark event will highlight the critical role urban forests play in tackling pressing challenges, including mounting pressures on ecosystems and natural resources.
Under the theme “Green Horizons: Shaping the Future Resilience of African Cities through Urban Forests”, the conference will convene global leaders, policymakers, and environmental experts at The Forum, The Campus in Bryanston, to explore how urban forests can transform the future of African cities.
Discussions will revolve around three key themes aligned with Africa’s urban forestry priorities:
- Day 1: “Climate-Proofing African Cities” – Focusing on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, this session will position urban forests as vital tools for bolstering the climate resilience of African cities.
- Day 2: “Equitable Access, Health, and Well-Being” – This theme will examine how urban forests enhance public health and well-being by providing accessible green spaces that encourage physical activity, improve mental health, and foster social cohesion.
- Day 3: “Making the Business Case for Urban Forests” – The final day will explore how sustainable financing and investment are essential in unlocking the full potential of a thriving urban forestry sector.
The event will be livestreamed on the City of Johannesburg’s YouTube platform. Join the conversation using @CityOfJoburgZA. For more information on AFUF please visit https://afuf.co.za/.
