Speaker urges Student Councillors to excel and lead SA

The Speaker of the Council in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Margaret Arnolds, conducted an orientation for the Johannesburg Student Council at the weekend, emphasising the importance of an engaged and active citizenry, particularly among young people.

Cllr Arnolds stressed the inseparable link between youth and the future, noting that neither can exist without the other. Addressing the junior councillors at the Constance Bapela Council Chamber in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, Cllr Arnolds stated: “Being part of the City’s Student Council is a life-changing experience; you shouldn’t take it lightly. This opportunity will steer you toward leadership. You are the future of the City of Johannesburg and South Africa.

“Do your best, be the best, and lead us, the City, and the country,” Cllr Arnolds said at the ceremony attended by enthusiastic pupils and parents from over 50 different schools across all seven regions of the city.

This year’s event also welcomed Student Council Alumni, who shared their experiences and lessons learned during their time as junior councillors. The Speaker also discussed the significance of the student council with eNCA: https://www.enca.com/videos/watch-preparing-pupils-future-leadership.

Banele Simelane, a former junior councillor who studied accounting science at the University of the Witwatersrand and is now serving his articles, shared words of encouragement: “For you to be a shining light of our society, you cannot speak about the problems of our country from a distance or comment from afar. As a junior councillor, you are actively contributing toward solutions. It is an honour and a privilege to be part of the City’s Student Council; take that baton and run with it.”

Launched in 2007, the City’s Student Council mirrors the regular council without party politics, equipping students with various skills to debate and to be considerate and responsible citizens.

Brenda Andrews, the Manager of the Student Council, officially welcomed newly elected junior councillors, stating: “I would like to welcome the new generation of game changers, trendsetters, and leaders. Your application and acceptance into this program as junior councillors in the City of Johannesburg mean that you have begun to see yourself as part of the social, economic, and political landscape in the city.”

As the student councillors prepare to address some of the most pressing issues facing young people in the city, it is essential to involve and empower them as vital stakeholders.
