SPAR Women’s Challenge Ignites Jozi With Energy and Empowerment

Johannesburg came alive on Sunday, 5 October 2025, as thousands of women took to the streets for the SPAR Women’s Challenge — a celebration of strength, wellness, and community spirit.

Hosted by the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department through its Sports and Recreation Directorate, this year’s race drew women of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels to tackle the 5km and 10km routes. Bigger and bolder than ever, the 35th edition carried the empowering theme #Twenty20Thrive, inspiring participants to embrace growth, health, and joy.

“This race is more than just a sporting event — it’s a movement of solidarity, health, and empowerment,” said MMC for Community Development, Councillor Tebogo Nkokou. “With thousands of participants across South Africa and the continent, the series combines elite competition with inclusive participation.”

The Johannesburg leg, held at Marks Park Sports Club, wrapped up the national series with a thrilling display of athleticism. Elite runners battled it out for SPAR Grand Prix points and prize money — and history was made when Glenrose Xaba of Boxer Athletics Club claimed her third SPAR Grand Prix title, becoming the first black South African to achieve this remarkable feat.
