Soweto Theatre’s music tutorial workshop culminates with spectacular concert

The Soweto Theatre Music Tutorial Programme recently concluded with a mesmerising musical performance concert, helmed by two of South Africa’s most esteemed arts administrators and conductors, Kutlwano Masote and Sifiso Msiza. Setting the stage for the concert, which marked the culmination of the weeklong programme, was an 8-year-old prodigious pianist who captivated the audience with a skilled musical piece. Following this breathtaking opening act, a diverse selection of musical compositions was presented under the batons of Msiza and Masote.

Among the enchanting melodies featured in the concert were Joko Ya Hao, Shosholoza, In the Jungle the Mighty Jungle, Circle of Life, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Phata Phata, Asimbonanga, and Jerusalema, to list a few.

The conductors, along with the young musicians, curated a seamless programme that exposed the audience to a wide range of musical brilliance and diverse tastes.

Vincent Motau, the General Manager of Soweto Theatre, expressed his appreciation for the concert.

“The theatre has taken the responsibility to ensure the musical education of local youngsters. I want to extend my gratitude to Masote for dedicating his extensive knowledge in music to nurture the skills of these learners,” Motau said.

Masote, who was approached by James Ngcobo, the Artistic Director of Joburg City Theatres, to lead the Soweto Theatre Music Tutorial Programme, expressed his admiration for the performance stage in Jabulani, which stands as the only one in any township equipped with its own in-house orchestra.

He shared his intrigue and motivation to serve the learners in Soweto by imparting his wisdom during the weeklong workshop, culminating in a concert fit for royalty.

“To say these learners are talented is an understatement. It is a testament to our capability as South Africans to reach an international level, from the streets of Soweto to the world,” he said.

The concert transcended mere music, evoking feelings of upliftment, captivation, and therapeutic solace.

As the audience departed the Red Theatre, their eyes glistened, providing tangible evidence of the learners’ exceptional abilities to keep the crowd on their feet, dancing, and exclaiming with joy.

The warm reception and flawless execution of the music underscored the immense potential of Soweto’s youth to forge a remarkable future with their musical prowess.

In recognition of their outstanding progress, unwavering dedication, and discipline, Ngcobo and Msiza hosted an awards ceremony following the performances.

During this momentous occasion, generous contributions were made to support the learners’ musical journey.

Local businessman Zweli Mntambo donated a violin, while Masote generously contributed a clarinet, and activist Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini presented a violin, silver flute, two trombones, and a piano.

Mntambo appealed to the community, urging them to donate any unused instruments to help sustain the musical aspirations of these young talents.

“Let us keep the flame of music alive by extending a helping hand to these budding musicians,” Mntambo emphasised.

To conclude the awards ceremony, the brass band delivered a soul-stirring rendition of the local classic hymn, “Rea Ho Leboha.”

Masote encouraged parents to continue supporting their children’s musical aspirations and expressed heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering commitment to the craft.

He extended his thanks to the management of Soweto Theatre, including Motau and Mimi Fihla, for opening the doors of their remarkable establishment to the young musicians.

Following the resounding success of the concert, a total of 120 learners from Soweto, Soshanguve, and other neighbouring parts of Johannesburg were enrolled in a week-long music camp, continuing their musical exploration and growth.
