Soweto Theatre is dedicated to celebrating and honoring talent. True to its promise, it will host the ‘Legends of Soweto in the City of Gold’ on Sunday, 29 September 2024.
The event will pay tribute to 40 artists whose work has impacted various artistic disciplines, including acting, dance, music, and poetry. Each honoree will be celebrated with a star embedded on the walls of the iconic Soweto Theatre for their contributions to the arts.
One such honoree is the late legendary actress Connie Chiume. Following her death in August, Soweto Theatre announced that she will be honored posthumously with a star at the ‘Legends of Soweto in the City of Gold’. Chiume, a household name in South Africa entertainment, passed away on 6 August. Her iconic roles in productions like Black Panther, Zone 14, Rhythm City, and Gomora cemented her status as a true acting legend.
Vincent Motau, Soweto Theatre General Manager, says ‘Legends of Soweto in the City of Gold’ celebration aims to pay homage to the remarkable artists who have profoundly influenced cultural landscapes.
“By embedding these 40 stars on the walls of Soweto Theatre, we not only recognize their immense contributions to the arts but also highlight the vital importance of creativity in our society. The arts have the power to inspire, connect, and transform. This event is a tribute to their enduring legacy and a beacon for sustaining the arts,” Motau adds.
Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, Joburg City Theatres (JCT) Chief Executive Officer, says the event is more than just a tribute to local artists and adds that it is a strategic milestone for JCT and the broader creative sector. “Honoring these exceptional individuals solidifies JCT’s commitment to nurturing and promoting local talent, positioning Soweto Theatre as a key player in the City’s cultural renaissance,” says Nduneni-Ngema.
“The support of the City of Johannesburg, as JCT’s shareholder, has been instrumental in making this vision a reality. Their continued investment in our institutions underscores the city’s dedication to the arts as a vital part of Johannesburg’s identity and economy. Together, we are building a legacy to inspire future generations, ensuring that the arts remain a powerful force
for community cohesion, economic growth, and cultural pride in Soweto and beyond,” Nduneni-Ngema adds.
It will be a glitz and glam event for the books and all stars will be shining bright. There will also be entertainment curated by James Ngcobo, JCT’s Artistic Director. Guests will also have an opportunity to explore the theatre’s stunning art pieces and architectural features before the stars are unveiled, creating a truly immersive and memorable experience at the Soweto Theatre, in the heart of Soweto.
