Soweto Theatre rolls out red carpet for kids over four days

Soweto Theatre, in celebration of ‘Take a Child to Theatre Month’, will present a four-day fun-filled campaign from 20 to 24 March 2023. The campaign is in collaboration with the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People, which aims to combat the poverty of imagination by recognising the transformative role of the arts in the lives of children and young people.

CEO of Joburg City Theatres Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema says: “With this campaign, we aim to process and encourage what’s known as different thinking by discovering and figuring out how the story is told and what it means.

“Theatre requires a different kind of resourcefulness and flexibility it stretches the skills of imagination.”

The campaign will offer children and young people around Soweto free access to experience once in a life time adventure packed with world-class shows.

“The celebration will feature dance workshops, story-telling and book giveaway, a career day for grade 11 and 12 pupils, a  disability awareness play performed by students from the Johannesburg Society for the Blind, a music performance and picnic by Youth Orchestra featuring Maharishi Institute Choir and Nothando Noter,” says Matodzi Mashau, the PR Officer at Soweto Theatre.

Soweto Theatre says the four days campaign will further encourage creativity, culture, communication and imagination.

“Theatre is the single-most valuable place where kids can explore the endless possibilities of their imaginations and what they can do,” says Makhosazana Hlatshwayo, a youth and community developer at Soweto Theatre.

“Without this space, children not only miss an amazing artistic experience, but they lose the chance to experience an endless amount of learning opportunities,” she adds.
