The Soweto Theatre takes immense pride in presenting the Legends Tribute Concert, dedicated to the iconic Babsy Mlangeni, from Saturday, 5 August until Sunday, 6 August, starting at 3 p.m. The concert serves as a grand celebration of the remarkable body of work crafted by the passionate legend during a challenging era in South Africa’s history. It also aims to honour and appreciate the invaluable lessons and stories imparted by Babsy, Umqali Wendlela.

In its second consecutive year, the annual Legends Tribute Concert at Soweto Theatre upholds the legacy of legendary artists, offering audiences the opportunity to revel in their world-renowned performances.

 

This year’s event will feature vocalists Langa Mavuso, Brian Temba, and COMPLETE, who will deliver a live musical tribute featuring Babsy’s finest show-tunes made popular during his illustrious career. The concert will be under the musical direction of Sipho “HotStix” Mabuse and Tshepo Mngoma.

 

Joburg City Theatres’ Artistic Director, James Ngcobo, says the concert will take the audience on a reflective musical journey, exploring Babsy Mlangeni’s legendary status and the profound impact of paying homage to him in the music industry.

 

Beyond celebrating Babsy’s musical odyssey, Ngcobo says the tribute also serves as a reminder of the immense influence of earlier generations, who paved the way for present-day artists in the music industry.

 

“It is an international phenomenon to celebrate not only the immense contributions of singers but also to pay tribute to their incredible ability to compose. Babsy’s lyrics, delivered in various languages, contributed significantly to the gravitas African languages rightfully deserve. He was a true village crier who worked wonders for the South African Songbook,” Ngcobo passionately explains.

 

He adds that the Legends Tribute Concert will showcase meticulously crafted melodies, awe-inspiring instrumentals, and poignant lyrics that evoke memories of Babsy Mlangeni’s extraordinary life, taking the audience on an unforgettable journey down memory lane.
