Soweto Marks Historic ride4hope Finish With New Classrooms and Computer Lab

The City of Joburg’s Community Development proudly supported the Nelson Mandela Ride4Hope as it celebrated its first-ever Soweto finish in the event’s eight-year history.

The four-day ride began on Wednesday, 3 September 2025, at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal. The initiative, which raises funds for selected beneficiaries, saw cyclists endure the open road, build memories, push personal limits, and leave a legacy in every town along the route.

The journey ended in jubilation at Hitekani Primary School in Chiawelo, Soweto, where Ride4Hope and its sponsors donated three brand-new classrooms and a fully equipped computer laboratory.

Community Development MMC in the City of Joburg Cllr Tebogo Nkokou, said: “We are immensely grateful to have supported this venture that carries forward the legacy of one of Africa’s greatest giants, Nelson Mandela. The donation will create a conducive environment for teaching and learning, while the computer lab will equip learners with vital technology skills in an area where such resources are rare. The City is proud of Ride4Hope, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the cyclists, and the sponsors who made this milestone possible.”

Hitekani Primary School principal Vusi Ngobeni expressed heartfelt gratitude: “Today we witness history being made at our school. Our classrooms will no longer be overcrowded, and our learners will now access opportunities in fields such as AI and other technology-driven skills. Thank you to MTN, Ride4Hope, the City of Joburg, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and the dedicated cyclists who made this a reality.”
