South African Library Week unites communities through literacy and fun

South African Library Week 2024 kicks off under the theme “Libraries Foster Social Cohesion”. From 18 March to 24 March 2024, communities across South Africa will come together to honour the vital role that libraries play in bringing people together, fostering connections, and promoting unity. The excitement began with the launch of South African Library Week on 16 March and 17 March 2024 at Marks Parks Sports Club in Emmarentia. Participants of all ages were invited to take part in a fun run/walk. Children were treated to face painting and a jumping castle. The City’s libraries had a book sale where prices started for as little as R5.

The event was attended by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu.

At the launch the MMC emphasised the importance that libraries play in the community.

“Libraries are a great escape and a window to infinite knowledge of culture, history and travel, a way of knowing and understanding others. Libraries are a powerful tool for social cohesion and celebrating each other’s differences. Let us all come together to celebrate this during Library week launch,” said Cllr Magwentshu.
