Siphiwe aims to spread the gospel through music

Music and family are close to Siphiwe Hadebe’s (42) heart. He grew up with a love for gospel and released a single in 2020 titled, Impilo Yami, under his artist name Geez. He now aims for the stars as he is working tirelessly to release an extended play (EP). Siphiwe joined the City in 2019 as part of the Expanded Public Works Programme in Social Development.

The following year, he was appointed Messenger and Driver in Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) Region F. His story is about starting from the bottom and staying focused on his singing goals. Not even his circumstances and a vehicle accident earlier this year could stop him from chasing his dream. He was born in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, and comes from a humble upbringing. Music was what made him feel alive.

“Music brought healing and comfort to my soul. I always sang with my whole heart. I went to Iphunguphungu Primary School. It was during those early stages that my love for music was instilled in me. I used to go to church with my mother and two younger siblings every Sunday. I was enrolled in the Sunday school choir and as an eight-year-old boy, I looked forward to Sundays because I knew there would be a lot of singing involved, with the Sunday choir being the main entertainment,” Siphiwe adds.

In high school, he joined a gospel group called Dundee Voices of Joy. Shortly after matriculating, Siphiwe moved to Johannesburg to look for a job. His father passed away and as the eldest, it was his responsibility to support his family back home.

While navigating his future and working odd jobs, he was inspired by other artists. “In Johannesburg, I used to come across a lot of gospel musicians singing in the streets. The legendary Dumi Mkokstad was one of them and many more. Their humble beginnings motivated me and kept my dream of being a musician alive. I knew that even though I’m working odd jobs, I will one day be granted the opportunity to sing on big stages,” he says.

Another artist he draws inspiration from is the late great gospel sensation Vuyo Mokoena. He says his main objective is to minister and bring hope. As a parting shot, he adds: “No matter where you come from or whatever the situation, God is the only solution, hence I have changed my sound to Afro gospel to accommodate everyone.”

For leisure he enjoys choir practice, singing and spending time with loved ones. The father of two says he is now focused on finishing his EP. “Watch this space,” he adds.
