The MMC of Environment and Infrastructure Services (EISD), Cllr Jack Sekwaila, visited Alexandra on Wednesday, 19 April to kickstart the #KleenaJoburg campaign. Predicated on keeping all areas of Johannesburg spotless, #KleenaJoburg is designed to tackle grime and other service delivery issues in previously marginalised communities.
MMC Sekwaila said the service delivery drive aimed to deal with issues of illegal dumping, potholes, streetlights, illegal water usage, and buildings constructed on top of municipal infrastructure.
“You see how dirty the City is; this should come to an end,” he said.
Ward Councillor Floyd Ngwenya said the #KleenaJoburg campaign would keep Alexandra clean.
Cllr Ngwenya said he looked forward to working with the MMC and City entities to ensure the people of Alex have decent living conditions.
“The people of Alex deserve better,” he said.
Lerato Kgalema, a general manager at City Power, urged the community to be the entity’s eyes and ears on the ground by reporting the vandalism of municipal infrastructure.
Pikitup’s Aluoneswi Mafunzwaini, the general manager for operations, said he was committed to clearing all illegal dumping sites in Alex.
“A cleaner City will result in better health,” said Mafunzwaini.
Tshilidzi Dombo, a manager from Joburg Water, said he’d be spending less time in the office and more time on the streets, dealing with service delivery blockages and water leaks, which make for an unsanitary environment.
“We want to work together as entities, making sure there is proper allocation of resources to respond to the call of the people,” said Cllr Sekwaila.
The MMC noted that the municipality acknowledged the many service delivery challenges it is grappling with in Alexandra and #KleenaJoburg was the first of many steps in resiling these them.
Liziwe Ntshinga-Makoro, the Regional Director in Region E, said collaborative work was critical in fast-tracking service delivery.
“Let’s get to work,” said Cllr Sekwaila as all City entities present hit the streets of Alexandra. He said #KleenaJoburg would continue to raise awareness on service delivery issues like littering, waste management, and saving water.
