Sekwaila drives clean-up of Emthonjeni taxi rank

Councillor Jack Sekwaila, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), spearheaded a large-scale clean-up effort at the Emthonjeni taxi station in Ivory Park. Cllr Sekwaila’s spruce-up of the Ivory Park taxi rank north of Johannesburg was part of the city-wide #KleenaJoburg campaign, aimed at improving service delivery by ensuring the Government of Local Unity (GLU) returns to basics.

Ward councillor Tomson Maluleka welcomed a high-profile contingent of City leaders and officials from Pikitup, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo, and City Power as part of the massive cleaning spree to demonstrate the City’s commitment to a clean, healthy, and safe environment.

MMC Sekwaila praised Regional Director Abigail Ndlovu for leading the initiative.

Ndlovu expressed her joy that the community was actively participating in the programme and knew the consequences of dumping on street corners.

“We need to create a clean, healthy, and safe environment for our children to live and play in,” she said.

The MMC thanked members of the Community Workers’ Programme (CWP) and the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP), as well as volunteers from other local organisations, for their participation in the Region A initiative, which aims to improve the delivery of basic services such as cleaning, grass cutting, pothole filling, traffic lights, water leaks, and roads.

The Ivory Park Taxi Association Chair, Johannes Mkhonza, was impressed with the clean-up effort and excited that they will now have an apollo light next to the rank to boost safety and visibility.

“I thank the City for coming to us with such a great initiative. We transport people around Ivory Park, and it is important for me to ensure we operate in a clean environment,” Mkhonza said.

MMC Sekwaila encouraged Ivory Park residents to abandon the culture of littering and learn to take care of their environment and public infrastructure.

“All the infrastructure the City puts up is for residents, and it is their responsibility to always look after it,” he said.
