Roodepoort youth warned against pitfalls of substance abuse

Scores of pupils from Unified Public School braved the cold weather and rain to attend a life skills programme hosted by Westview Clinic at the Florida Library in Roodepoort this week. The event, organised by the City’s Library and Information Services in Region C, was designed to equip the youngsters with crucial knowledge on avoiding and managing substance abuse, which is a major problem among the youth today. Senior librarian Monica Ramabulana says the library hosts such initiatives to shape the mindsets of young people and guide them towards the right path.

Ramabulana says it’s crucial to educate people about the pitfalls of being young so that the message is effectively ingrained in their moral sense, and they can carry it into adulthood.

“These programmes are especially fitting for learners this age as they are at a stage where they are dealing with peer pressure and witnessing the dangers of substance abuse right in their communities,” she says.

The Florida Library regularly collaborates with the Westview rehabilitation clinic to host educational programmes for young people of different ages.

Mpho Morei from the clinic notes that they cover a wide range of topics related to socio-economic challenges faced by youth. These include teaching leadership skills, providing information on the proper channels for seeking help, and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

The 60 participating pupils were enthusiastic throughout the session, which involved hands-on activities and discussions on some of the challenges they face.

Grade 9 pupil Siphesihle Dhlamini says there was a significant change in the mindset of boys as a result of the programme, adding it encourages them to speak up and seek help without feeling ashamed.

“These events encourage us boys especially, to be able to speak up when we’re faced with issues and also do away with the attitude of saying boys should not seek help or show emotion,” he says.

The City continues to work with community organisations to tackle obstacles that prevent future leaders from reaching their full potential.
