Roodepoort Museum turns into giant playground for local preschoolers

The Roodepoort Museum recently hosted its annual Early Childhood Development Programme, themed “History is Green”, with a focus on promoting eco-friendly awareness. Anne Smart, who is the Chief Curator at the Roodepoort Museum, highlighted the significance of history as inherently “green”, illustrating how it informs sustainable practices in our interaction with the environment, reflected in the day’s activities.

Preschoolers from various schools across Roodepoort embarked on an enriching excursion to the Roodepoort Museum, immersing themselves in a world of historical treasures and environmental insights, leaving both children and caregivers enthralled with newfound knowledge.

Under the guidance of their educators, the children were captivated by the museum’s exhibits.

Virginia Ben of Little Angels Day Care in Braamfischerville shared her delight in witnessing the children’s awe and curiosity as they encountered artifacts and vintage toys, igniting their imagination.

Guided by passionate curators, the children explored the evolution of technology, from antique telephones to modern cell phone devices, sparking moments of revelation and understanding about the passage of time and innovation.

Following the educational tour, the children engaged in creative activities, crafting dough into personalised necklaces. Encouraged by their mentors, each child unleashed their creativity, fostering a sense of accomplishment and individuality.

The day also featured physical activities promoting teamwork and healthy living. From scooter races to sack races and balance exercises, the children embraced the concept of a healthy mind in a healthy body with boundless energy and enthusiasm.

For Dumela Muchongwe of Magic Faith in Roodepoort North, the return visit underscored the museum’s enriching experience, affirming the joy of discovery for children.

Lucial Dimande of Tiny Blessings in Dobsonville echoed this sentiment, praising the educational value of the museum visit for young learners.

The trip to Roodepoort Museum transcended a mere day out; it was an educational odyssey that ignited curiosity, nurtured creativity, and left a lasting impact on both the young adventurers and their dedicated caregivers.

Experience the wonders of Johannesburg’s museums.
