Rhodes off to a Flying Start Before Rain Halts Joburg Ladies Open

Mimi Rhodes made an impressive start at the Joburg Ladies Open on Thursday, showcasing her growing confidence and precision on the course. The 23-year-old English golfer is among 132 top professionals competing at the Modderfontein Golf Club in Johannesburg.

Despite weather disruptions, Rhodes carded a superb opening round, finishing at 8-under-par to take an early commanding lead before play was suspended due to heavy rain. Tournament officials confirmed that the first round is set to resume on Friday morning at 07:00 local time.

Reflecting on her performance, Rhodes emphasised the importance of strategy and execution. “I think placing yourself well on the fairway is key. That sets you up for a great shot into the green. I had a lot of putts inside 10 feet today, many of which I made, though I still feel like I left some out there,” she said. “Overall, it was a really solid round.”

When asked whether she keeps tabs on her competitors, Rhodes admitted to occasionally sneaking a look at the leaderboard. “If there’s a leaderboard nearby, I’ll have a quick look. But it’s still early days, so I don’t let it affect me. I just try to stay in my bubble, chat with my caddie, and enjoy the round. Playing with Leanne and Marta today was great fun, and the day just flew by.”

Rhodes’ performance continues her strong form on the Ladies European Tour (LET). In March, she secured her maiden LET title with a two-shot victory, marking a major milestone in her young career. “This performance has really boosted my confidence, especially my putting. I’m in a good headspace and feeling positive overall,” she added.

Now in its 10th edition, the Joburg Ladies Open is part of the Sunshine Ladies Tour and attracts elite professional golfers from around the world. Despite the weather delay, anticipation remains high as the field prepares to resume play on Friday morning, with Rhodes setting the pace.
