The Kilburn Street bridge, situated between Celeste and Syd Dwyer streets in Discovery, Roodepoort, was officially reopened to the public last week after extensive rehabilitation work.
The reopening ceremony was attended by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, Cllr Kenny Kunene, and the CEO of the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Zweli Nyathi. The project, which involved replacing culverts, upgrading stormwater infrastructure, and implementing erosion control measures, was necessitated by severe damage caused by flooding in December 2024.
“We are delighted to hand over this newly upgraded road and bridge to the community,” said Nyathi. “This vital infrastructure will improve traffic flow and enhance the overall quality of life for residents and businesses in the area.”
MMC Kunene emphasised the importance of the project, stating: “The safety of our residents is a top priority. This rehabilitation work ensures that Kilburn Street can once again be safely used by the community.”
Local resident Joyce Brown expressed her relief at the bridge’s reopening, highlighting the impact of the closure on her daily routine. “I’m thrilled to have this road back in use,” she said. “It makes a huge difference to my family and many others in the community.”
The JRA urged residents to assist in preserving the newly rehabilitated infrastructure.
