The City’s directorate of sport and recreation in Region A offered a free sweat-inducing aerobics session to the public at Busy-Corner Imbizo Shisanyama on the weekend, showcasing the best movements in Midrand. Region A residents enjoyed a two-hour calorie-burning session on Saturday, 21 January 2023, which was complemented by cheerful music. Locals in the Region attested to the fact that it’s an excellent way to start the day and that the calorie-burning exercises help enhance general fitness.
Coach Mervis Mkhize led the group as early as 7am while the sun shone brightly, and birds chirped soothing melodies.
“Getting up early in the morning can be a challenge, but there are plenty of good reasons to do it. For one, it’s a fantastic way to get some exercise. Everyone, regardless of age, gender, or physical ability, can benefit from becoming more active,” said Mkhize, the founder of Trimax Fitness Club.
He added that there was plenty of evidence that regular physical exercise may lead to a more effective immune response, giving greater protection against acquiring chronic illnesses.
“It is therefore essential that we begin at the grassroots and encourage our youngsters to live healthy lifestyles because when someone is physically fit, they feel better and stay healthier.
Furthermore, the earlier a child starts exercising, the lower their risk of developing a variety of illnesses,” Mkhize said.
The aerobics programme is a component of the healthy living project that the City of Johannesburg has put in place across the entire metro.
Emmanuel Mboweni, the City’s Sport and Recreation Operational Manager for Region A said aerobics is an engaging platform that keeps citizens of all ages busy.
“We want to keep the youth busy so that they don’t engage in harmful behaviours like drug and substance abuse. Aerobics is by far among the most essential approaches for living a longer and healthier life. It is never too late to start living a healthier lifestyle,” said Mboweni.
Lehlogonolo Mothwa, 43, of Allandale, who was one of the participants, expressed her satisfaction with the aerobics session offered by the City.
“I feel rejuvenated and have a sense of accomplishment. I feel like I have more energy than I had before, and my blood is pumping. It’s a lovely sensation, albeit a little intense, but no one has ever regretted a workout,” said Mothwa enthusiastically.
