Proteas Dominate Malawi in Thrilling Netball Clash

South Africa’s Spar Proteas made a dominant start to their three-match netball series against Malawi, securing a convincing 68-31 victory on Thursday evening, 31 October 2024, at Ellis Park Arena.

The highly anticipated clash between Africa’s top two teams drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The Proteas, ranked first in Africa, showcased their skill and determination, overpowering the Malawi Queens.

The match was preceded by the South African men’s netball team’s victory over Zimbabwe, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport among male athletes. In recent years, there has been a significant surge in male participation, with over 60 teams competing in the 2024 National Championships.

Kamogelo Maseko once again proved why she is one of the most exciting netball players in the world, delivering a stellar performance. The Proteas’ victory was not only a sporting triumph but also an opportunity to raise awareness about period poverty, a significant issue affecting young girls in South Africa.

Spar, the main sponsor of the Proteas, used the platform to highlight the challenges faced by many girls who miss school due to a lack of sanitary products.

Siya Mnukwa, Executive Director for Community Development at the City of Johannesburg, expressed the city’s commitment to sports development. “The City of Joburg’s support of netball demonstrates the City’s commitment to sports development and particularly women’s sports. This netball event further solidifies the City as a destination of choice for international sporting events.”
