Protea North Library hosted a special storytelling event to celebrate World Read Aloud Day. The event aimed to foster a love for reading among young learners through engaging reading and storytelling activities on 5 February 2025.
Sbongile Ntimane, a dedicated library patron, opened the session by reading a Nal’ibali story in both English and isiZulu, ensuring the story was accessible to all attendees. This was followed by an exciting storytelling session led by Grace Mabena, the librarian at Protea North Library, who brought stories to life with her expressive narration.
Two Grade 7 learners from Zibambele Primary School also participated by reading a Nal’ibali story in English and isiZulu, showcasing their growing confidence in reading aloud.
The event was attended by 40 learners from Zibambele Primary School, along with 10 adults, including Region D library staff and representatives from the ARK Soweto NGO.
Reflecting on the experience, one of the learners, Palesa Nkoane, shared her excitement about the event, saying: “It was fun to listen to different stories and learn new words. I want to read more books and tell my own stories one day.”
The storytelling event highlighted the power of reading in enhancing language skills and nurturing a love for books among young minds. With continued efforts from libraries and community organisations, literacy development will remain a key focus in empowering the next generation of readers and storytellers.
