The Joburg Ladies Open 2023 is fast approaching, and the City is putting the finishing touches on its preparations to host a world-class event. In less than three weeks, the tournament will tee-off at the Modderfontein Golf Course.
The annual showpiece, which is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Ladies Tour and the European Tour, attracts elite women golfers from across the world.
Bongi Mokaba, the City’s director of events management, says there is an exciting tournament programme to look forward to, beginning with the invite-only Pro-Am event scheduled for Tuesday, 28 February 2023. In the Pro-Am, amateur golfers will be pitted against professional golfers. Ladies will play in groups of four, with two professional golfers in each ensemble. The Pro-Am grants professionals the opportunity to compete in a final practise round before the tournament begins the following day. In keeping with the theme ‘Pro-Am with a Purpose,’ a “splash for baddies” drive will be held, which entails imposing a fine on any ball that lands in the ponds at Modderfontein Golf Course. The proceeds will be used to purchase dignity packs for a school in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
The four-day ladies’ spectacle will begin on Wednesday, 1 March 2023, and conclude on Saturday, 4 March 2023.
Mokaba says the Joburg Ladies Open provides excellent opportunities for golfers. Linn Grant received a two-year qualifying exemption to play in other tournaments after winning the Joburg Ladies Open in 2022.
Despite not returning to defend her title due to a chock-a-block international schedule, Grant won several European Tour events after winning the Joburg Open, including the Belgian Ladies Open, Scandinavian Masters, and Skaftö Open.
“The Joburg Open and Ladies Open are becoming training grounds for women and men to travel the world and make their names,” adds Mokaba.
As in previous years, the tournament will be livestreamed on SuperSport, so there is no excuse not to watch the action, either from your coach or from the spectator’s zone at the venue.
