Pool safety paramount as City remains on high alert

With the holiday season fast approaching and the summer heat upon us, nothing beats jumping in the water to cool off when visiting the City’s swimming pools, which cater to people of all ages. This December, the City of Johannesburg has approximately 50 public swimming pools open for your enjoyment. The hours of operation are from 10a.m. to 5p.m. daily. Swimming pools will be closed on the following public holidays: December 25th, 26th, and 1st January 2023.

”We have neat and tidy facilities with good quality water and friendly and well-trained staff that residents can expect when visiting our pools,” says Siyanda Mnukwa, the City’s Director of Sports and Recreation, noting that more pools are being built in Regions A and C.

Mnukwa says the City has increased its focus on residents’ safety this holiday season, particularly children playing near water.

He believes that following the most important pool safety rules is the best way to enjoy the pleasant weather and summer vacation.

Extensive public notices with rules and regulations, as well as indemnities, are posted at all municipal pools to prioritise pool safety and avoid drowning incidents.

“We would like to remind residents and visitors to our pools to pay attention to safety regulations and signage indicating rules and regulations, as well as to show respect for fellow patrons and staff,” Mnukwa cautions.

He calls on parents to be extra cautious because their children will be spending time near water.

The MMC for Community Development, Cllr Ronald Harris, urges parents to keep a close eye on their children.

“Do not allow children to swim alone because drowning can occur at any time and in a matter of seconds,” Cllr Harris advises.

He says municipal lifeguards will be on duty during operating hours to ensure swimmer safety and to prevent any potential injuries.

“To avoid unfortunate events, residents are urged to follow the instructions of lifeguards and security officers on duty,” he adds.

The MMC says the municipality has worked with communities and various stakeholders to provide residents with low-cost recreation activities in the City while also promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

The City of Johannesburg wishes all of its residents a joyous and safe holiday season.
