Pikitup, the waste management company of the City of Johannesburg, has entered into a working relationship with the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo aimed at assisting the latter to clear waste.

The agreement between the two city-owned entities will see Pikitup collect and clear tons of waste that has been accumulating over time and on completion, Pikitup will continue to collect waste at the Johannesburg Zoo.
It is anticipated that the agreement will bring a sigh of relief to residents staying adjacent to the Zoo who have been complaining about the foul smell from the property. Pikitup has already started to clear the waste and its operations team anticipates that all the waste will be completed by the end of January 2023.
A secondary site, containing building rubble that has been in the zoo for at least five years will also be cleaned to ensure it looks as beautiful as it should. Together we will make our city a green space to be proud of.
Pikitup is also engaging a variety of stakeholders to assist the zoo to collect animal waste, which is a by-product for compost. A number of stakeholders have shown a keen interest, however, no concrete agreement has been reached yet.
The waste collection agreement reached between the two city entities is for 36 months and subject to renewal by both parties on completion.
