People’s Race Ignites: Joburg Launches 2025 African Bank Soweto Marathon

The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Community Development, through its Sports and Recreation directorate, together with title sponsor African Bank and other partners, officially launched the prestigious 2025 African Bank Soweto Marathon on Wednesday, 17 September, at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, Soweto.

Affectionately known as The People’s Race, this iconic marathon is more than just a sporting event – it is a celebration of heritage, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of South Africa, particularly Soweto’s rich cultural history. The race is set to take place on 29 November.

As the only large-scale race held in a township in South Africa – drawing 25 000 participants in 2024 – the Soweto Marathon carries immense historical and cultural significance. Runners will once again trace a route that passes key heritage landmarks, reflecting the political and cultural legacy of Soweto.

Speaking at the launch, MMC for Community Development Cllr Tebogo Nkokou said: “This is not just the start of a race. This is the ignition of a movement – a movement that celebrates our heritage, our unity, and our unstoppable spirit.

“For 30 years, the People’s Race has been a journey through the soul of our city. And right here, at the Soweto Theatre, we are reminded that Soweto is not only a place of history – it is a place of rhythm, of colour, of creativity, and of pride.”

African Bank CEO Sbusiso Khumalo added: “This reflects our commitment to supporting the township economy. A lot of money is made in Soweto, but it often leaves. Through this partnership, we aim to ensure that the economy of this iconic township is strengthened and sustained – just as African Bank itself was born here in Soweto 50 years ago.”
