Region F’s Directorate of Sports and Recreation hosted an energetic kiddies’ games event at the Bertha Solomon Recreation Centre in Jeppestown, which drew 213 children from seven (7) Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres. The children were ferried to the venue from Little Lambs, Mighty Kids, Wings of Hope, Zwavhudi, Khayalethu, Goldie & Bears, and Sizani ECDs in the region.
From the moment they alighted their transport, the scores of children were eager to engage in over seven (7) sporting activities, including ball hopping, ball throwing, ball kicking, ball dribbling, ring throwing, bean bag challenges, and relay.
Out of the more than 200 children that participated, only 70 reigning little champions have been selected to represent Region F at the upcoming citywide kiddies’ games, on Friday, 19 May at the Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg.
The selection process saw only 10 children per sporting code selected to compete with their counterparts from across all seven regions of Johannesburg.
Nonhlanhla Maboa, Assistant Director for Sports and Recreation in Region F, says the City supports the hosting of such events because they help children to improve their mental, psychological, and emotional well-being.
“Our kiddie games are targeted at children in ECDs who are aged between 5 and 6 years old. Thanks to the outreach team in Region F and the staff of Murray Park Library for hosting such a successful event,” Maboa says.
She says the kiddies’ games were a resounding success and showcased Region F’s young talent, creating a platform for children to display their athletic prowess and hone their skills.
“This event demonstrated the power of sports in building confidence in young children. All participants had a wonderful time engaging in the various sports activities, which not only improved their physical skills but also helped to develop their cognitive and social skills,” Maboa says.
