The City of Johannesburg’s Region D held a successful community outreach event at Dobsonville Point, Extension 3 on Thursday, 24 October 2024. This Regional Integrated Education and Awareness campaign brought together various City departments and municipal entities to connect directly with residents, providing essential information on city services, by-laws, and available opportunities.
The event aimed to bridge the gap between the City and its residents, allowing community members to address local issues directly with officials who work in their neighbourhoods. Many residents raised concerns with the Development Planning Department, particularly regarding property boundary encroachments. Officials clarified the importance of submitting and approving building plans through the municipality, helping residents understand the process and the benefits of compliance.
Pikitup, the city’s waste management service, provided guidance on applying for replacement bins if stolen and encouraged households with multiple tenants to apply for additional bins to prevent illegal dumping. Its officials stressed the importance of keeping open spaces free from waste and urged the community to report any suspicious dumping activity, especially by companies disposing of rubble outside business hours.
In light of high unemployment levels in the area, many residents showed interest in the city’s Extended Social Package (ESP). The programme provides qualifying citizens with essential subsidies on rates and services, including refuse collection, sewer, water, and electricity, supporting those facing financial difficulties.
Local resident Sizwe Nkomo expressed his gratitude for the city’s outreach efforts, saying, “It’s a relief to have city officials come directly to us to share this information. Many of us cannot afford to travel to city offices for assistance.”
For Nkomo and others, the event offered valuable access to city services that would otherwise be difficult to reach. With ongoing campaigns like this, Region D remains committed to educating residents on city by-laws, promoting responsible waste disposal, and empowering communities to keep their neighbourhoods safe and clean.
