Obeah Opera Captivates Audience on Opening Night

The Soweto Theatre erupted in a standing ovation on Sunday, 4 August 2024, marking a triumphant opening night for Obeah Opera’s international premiere tour. The buzz of excitement filled the packed house as the actors took to the stage, captivating the audience from the very beginning.

“It was an amazing and well-attended opening,” shared Vincent Motau, General Manager of the Soweto Theatre. “The performance left the audience in awe and ended with a standing ovation.”

Obeah Opera, a captivating a cappella musical, retells the story of the Salem Witch trials through the lens of enslaved Caribbean women. Its arrival in South Africa during Women’s Month holds particular significance. The themes of female empowerment and unity resonate deeply with the spirit of the month, which celebrates the strength and contributions of women throughout history and the present.

Motau highlighted the production’s unique perspective and educational value. “What resonates with South Africa is that we’re 30 years into democracy. We’ve come a long way in recognising and celebrating women. This production amplifies the voices of women and girls, seizing this moment perfectly.”

He encouraged Johannesburg residents to support the production while it continues its run at the Soweto Theatre until 11 August 2024. “Come out and support this powerful production rich in history, celebrating women this Women’s Month!”

Obeah Opera will embark on a national tour, visiting the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State in Bloemfontein and the South African State Theatre in Pretoria, marking a groundbreaking collaboration between these esteemed institutions.
