The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, and the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Cllr Funzi Ngobeni, launched Metrobus’ newly refurbished buses at Metrobus Roodepoort Depot on Wednesday, 13 July 2022. This is after the commuter’s outcry over old buses that were creating inconvenience around Joburg.
“All 105 of these new buses have commenced operation. And we are proud to have contributed to the creation of 63 local jobs through this refurbishment programme. Furthermore, we are also pleased to launch Metrobus’ next three-year R90 million refurbishment programme on its seven-year-old buses.
“Quality public transport is a great equaliser in society, and we are committed to building a more equal society where everyone has the opportunities they need to get ahead in life and live a life that they value,” said Mayor Phalatse.
Metrobus is an integral part of the City’s public transport network and moves over 8 million commuters annually.
In 36 months period, the Metrobus’ refurbishment programme has set itself a target of refurbishing 100 buses, however, that number was exceeded to 105 buses. The programme included performing engine overhauls and significant body repair work. Six of the 105 buses are dedicated to people with disabilities.
“These vehicles add to the almost 300 buses currently operational and ferrying residents to various destinations,” said Xoliswa Mhlongo, the Managing Director of Metrobus.
The City has received about 70% satisfaction rating from Metrobus commuters, with most saying the buses are reliable, safe to travel in and the fares budget friendly.
The refurbishment programme will extend the lifespan of buses by between five and eight years, optimising the routes by increasing frequency.
