Newly elected Joburg Junior Mayor, Kamogelo Malikane, has pledged to foster a culture of entrepreneurship among the city’s young people.
Malikane and Junior Speaker of Council, Mbalenhle Dlamini, were inaugurated at Trinityhouse Glenvista High School on Monday, 5 August 2024. The duo took the oath of office in the school hall filled with teachers, parents, students, fellow junior councillors, community members, local councillors, and City officials.
Malikane plans to launch a ‘Yes’ campaign focusing on entrepreneurship and sports. He aims to create multiple entrepreneurial incubators to help young people network and develop their business skills. He also stressed the importance of all citizens caring for the city.
“During my term of office, I plan to focus on multiple entrepreneurial incubators, giving young people the opportunity to interact with other entrepreneurs, thereby enhancing their networking and communication skills,” said Malikane.
Dlamini expressed her commitment to supporting the Mayor’s plans. “My commitment as the Junior Speaker extends beyond the council chambers. I strive to inspire other young people, to remind them that their voices are essential, and that they are equipped to make a difference.”
She encouraged the youth to recognise their power to influence and inspire change. “Together, let us ensure the legacy we leave is one that fills every young person in our City with hope and opportunity,” Dlamini concluded.
During their two-year term, student councillors are required to participate in various community projects and initiatives. Launched in 2007, the City’s Student Council provides young people with leadership and civic engagement opportunities.
