Montso: The Woman Behind the City of Johannesburg’s Social Media Voice

Whether it’s her radiant smile, cool sneakers, or vibrant energy, Lesego Montso stands out. But beyond her online presence, she plays a key role in shaping how the City of Johannesburg connects with residents through social media.

As one of the City’s Social Media Officers, Lesego brings heart to hashtags and authenticity to every post. “I love exploring the City and uncovering the different stories it holds. It allows me to shift perspectives and help people see Johannesburg in a new light,” she says.

Her passion for storytelling began early, inspired by her father, Martin Montso, a news editor at the SABC. Childhood visits to the broadcaster’s Auckland Park studios sparked her love for content creation. Though she briefly pursued psychology after school, she found her true calling in writing and content production.

After contributing to student publications like The Flame, she joined the City of Johannesburg through an internship in 2016. Within six months, she secured the Social Media Officer role.

Lesego is also a DJ, model, skater and yoga enthusiast. “Scheduling is everything. Whatever I do, I try to be 100% present,” she says.

Raised by her teacher mother, Laura, and a father who taught her to embrace life’s curveballs, Lesego believes in showing up fully — for herself and others.

“As women, we wear many hats. But joy and wellbeing come first. Love yourself, do what your heart wants — that’s how you live fully.”
