The Johannesburg Zoo is turning 120 years old and to celebrate the momentous occasion, it plans to make March a month of celebrations. From small beginnings of housing only five animals: a lion, leopard, giraffe and two sable antelope, it now boasts over 2 000. It officially opened its gates to the public on 22 March 1904.
“When we celebrate occasions as big as 120 years of existence, we take the time to remember the humble beginnings and look forward to the possibilities the future may hold. With that in mind we have to celebrate with all the wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers who love and adore the zoo as much as we do,” says Johannesburg Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley.
The programme for the zoo’s birthday month includes phenomenal discounts and surprises for all visitors. Entry to the zoo will cost R20 from 1 to 29 March. Those celebrating their birthdays in March will gain access absolutely free (just bring your ID).
On 10 March, the zoo will host its fun and early morning bi-monthly Zoo Trot that is also open to the public to join early morning runs or walks throughout the pristine zoo pathways. It will celebrate Senior
Citizens Day four days later on 14 March.
It would not be a birthday celebration without a grand bash. This will take place on 21 March and will include live music, a kiddies’ face-painting extravaganza filled with surprises and hidden treasures, and an epic in-house birthday bash safari to catch a live peek of the Big 5.
“The Johannesburg Zoo remains the most sought-after entry point to view the big five in the city. So, to experience the rip roaring birthday, patrons must make sure to join us for the celebration. It costs less than your favourite latte!” says Moodley.
