The Directorate of Sports and Recreation in Region A has gratefully received a substantial donation of sporting equipment from MNS Attorneys, aimed at bolstering Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.
Around 130 young children have already had the opportunity to experience the new sporting equipment during an ECD sporting programme organised by Mandla Mahlangu, Assistant Director for Sports and Recreation in Region A.
The excitement was palpable among scores of young children, most of whom hail from impoverished households in Ivory Park, as they experienced the programme at Lord Khanyile Community Hall recently.
Transported from various ECDs, including Bophelo Bo Bontle, Prince and Princess, Mmakgabo Day Care, the Luks, Thapelo, Agisanang, and Sinabo, the children were introduced to activities such as ring throwing, ball hopping, ball dribbling, ball kicking, ball throwing, and bean bag jumping – many for the very first time.
Their exuberance knew no bounds, as their enthusiastic cheers reverberated through the community hall while they eagerly participated in every sporting activity.
Mahlangu says the City’s early childhood development sports programme for pre-schoolers is meticulously designed to nurture social interaction, alongside fostering physical and emotional well-being.
“Promoting mental and physical well-being is also a key focus,” he added.
Specific benefits of the activities were highlighted. Ring throwing, for instance, helps develop hand-eye coordination, while ball hopping strengthens leg muscles, coordination, and balance. Ball dribbling, meanwhile, enhances hand-eye coordination and dexterity as children learn to manipulate the ball with their feet.
“Introducing these fundamental sporting activities at a young age lays a strong foundation for a child’s physical, cognitive, and social development. They provide a fun and engaging way for them to acquire essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives,” Mahlangu explains.
Following the programme’s success in Ivory Park, Mahlangu says there are plans to extend similar initiatives to other communities within Region A.
He notes that this event targeted at ECDs in Ivory Park was a resounding success and says the intention is to extend such initiatives to other communities within Region A.
