Cllr Ennie Makhafola, MMC for Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg, hosted a Heritage Month celebration on Friday, 13 September 2024, at the Orlando Communal Hall.
Themed “Empowering Voices: Celebrating Women in Heritage”, the event aimed to recognise and honour the vital role women play in communities, with a focus on their unique contributions to society.
Women from Region D, Soweto, attended in large numbers, proudly showcasing their cultural heritage with vibrant traditional attire, reflecting the diversity of South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry.
In her keynote address, MMC Makhafola highlighted the importance of women in shaping society. “As we gather today during Heritage Month, it is a moment of pride, honour, and reflection for all of us to celebrate with the progressive women of Johannesburg,” she said.
Makhafola also spoke about the City’s ongoing initiatives, including the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Advisory Desk and 24-hour Crisis Centre, launched in August 2023 to combat gender-based violence and drug abuse. She urged women to make use of these free services.
“The establishment of the Gender-Based Violence Desk demonstrates our unwavering commitment to tackling gender-based violence and femicide. With your support and passion, we aim to create safer communities where women can thrive without fear,” Makhafola added.
Guest speaker Yekela Masiba, a motivational speaker and social worker from Gauteng Social Development, inspired attendees with empowering words: “Don’t be afraid of criticism. Do you know why? Because you matter! If you don’t want criticism in life, say nothing, do nothing, and be nothing.”
Alongside the programme, participants engaged in various health and wellness activities, including blood pressure checks, TB screenings, and PSA screenings at information and lifestyle stalls.
The event ended on a joyful note with a performance by the Soweto Elderly Persons’ Choir, filling the hall with song, dance, and ululation.
