MMC Cllr Leitch says Riverside View is a milestone in urban integration

The Riverside View Social Housing Project represents a pivotal chapter in the City of Johannesburg’s pursuit of equitable living conditions, said Anthea Leitch, the MMC for Human Settlements in the City of Johannesburg today, 25 August 2023. She was welcoming delegates and dignitaries at the launch of the project in Diepsloot, Region A. The launch marked the start of phases 1 and 2, as well as the breaking of ground for phase 3.

MMC Leitch was joined by the Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi, Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development Lebogang Maile, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, Joshco board and executive management, the Regional Director for Region A, Abigail Ndlovu, Ward 96 Councillor Cllr Rufus Mazwazi and  members of the community.

Cllr Leitch said that with an ever-evolving urban landscape like Region A, where dynamic economic growth and persistent pockets of poverty coexist, Riverside View offers the City of Johannesburg a canvas to create a more integrated community.

The project’s impact is not limited to its physical structure but extends to empowerment. Through the EPWP programme, 400 job opportunities were created, with a focus on promoting gender equity by engaging three female-owned subcontractors. The project underscores the City’s commitment to not only providing housing but also supporting local economic growth.

The project’s main objectives include promoting social integration, offering safe and habitable housing, and contributing to the sustainable development of Johannesburg. On completion, Riverside View will have a total of 1 108 units comprising 160 bachelor units, 72 one-bedroom units, and 876 two-bedroom units, each equipped with a kitchen, dining area and bathroom.

The allocation process, characterised by stakeholder engagement and rigorous vetting, ensures transparency and fairness. These units are often confused as RDP units but are strictly rental units and are a vital component of our social fabric, offering upward mobility to those striving to improve their quality of life.

“As we embark on this journey, we acknowledge the collaborative efforts of all spheres of government, private partners, and the community. This project is a collective endeavor to uplift lives and foster sustainable growth. Today’s launch is a testament to our commitment, and the breaking of ground for phase 3 promises a future of further advancement,” said MMC Leitch.
