Mayor Gwamanda welcomes world to the Joburg Open

A week of exciting golf officially started on Monday, 20 November 2023, during a welcoming function at the Houghton Hotel in Johannesburg. Golfers, guests and sponsors networked on the eve of the Pro Am set to tee off on Tuesday, 21 November 2023.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, said the metropolis was full of opportunities and never disappoints with its ability to host international events.

“It’s a demonstration of the fact that not only are we a world-class African city with the richest square mile in Africa, but we’re also a city that is capable. That is a tourist attraction and a melting pot for opportunities. The world knows it and that’s why they want to be part of the Joburg experience. We are here to give them the best experience that we can get,” Cllr Gwamanda said.

This year marks the 17th edition of the Joburg Open and the tournament returns to the lush lawns of the Houghton Golf Club. It is co-sanctioned by the international Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, and boasts participation from 156 golfers worldwide, making it a prestigious and acclaimed event for both local and international players.

The main tournament starts on Thursday, 23 November, and takes place over four days. The final is on Sunday, 26 November. The winner, to be announced on Sunday, will share in a prize purse of 1.5 million euros (equivalent to R20.5 million) with players who made the cut.

Cllr Gwamanda wished all golfers the best of luck in the tournament and Pro Am. “I wish them well and I know the South Africans will do us proud.”

He also urged residents not to miss out on the experience. “Seeing is believing. I encourage residents to come out and see the experience and support the initiative.”

The event is open to spectators. Tickets are available for purchase on the Sunshine Tour website (https://quickbuy.mygolflife.co.za/sunshine-tour/2023-joburg-open)
