Masote’s baton to conduct Soweto Theatre orchestra

Renowned orchestra conductor Kutlwano Masote has joined forces with the Joburg City Theatres Music Tutorial Programme to curate a week-long series of music exchange workshops which will culminate in a full-fledged concert performance on Sunday, 2 July in Soweto. “This collaboration aims to harness the power of music theory and sound harmony, fostering a memorable opportunity for students in the Music Tutorial Programme (MTP),” says Masote, an acclaimed conductor.

The programme, designed to explore various approaches and developments in classical music since 1976, has been showcasing a captivating collection of classical music pieces at the Soweto Theatre since Monday, 26 June and will run until Friday, 30 June at 2pm.

Through this collection, participants are gaining insight into the connection between classical music and South Africa’s urban landscapes.

Working alongside these talented youngsters, Masote aims to provide support and resources, nurturing innovative concepts that contribute to the growth of the Soweto Theatre Music Tutorial Programme.

“The workshops offer a deeper understanding of musical expression, encouraging a unique approach to storytelling and individual musicality through the application of music theory, knowledge of the music industry, sound art and music technology, and music expression,” he explains.

Hailing from a musical family in Soweto, Masote embarked on his musical journey at an early age under the guidance of his father, Michael, the founder of the Soweto Symphony Orchestra.

His versatility as a music director and conductor is evident through his involvement in cross-cultural music projects and performances.

He has notably orchestrated music by renowned Hip-Hop artists Khuli Chana and Kwesta, soul singers Kabomo and Maleh, as well as Lira, the late Sibongile Khumalo, Zonke, and now the Joburg City Theatre’s Music Tutorial Programme.

The Soweto ensemble will premiere its repertoire to the general public on Sunday, 2 July. Tickets, priced at R100, can be purchased at the box office at the Soweto Theatre, located on Bolani Road in Jabulani.
