Makgafela Thaba is positioning himself as a leader who will prioritise fairness and integrity in his role as Regional Director for Region E.
“Leading without fear or favour will allow me to ensure that decisions are made based on what is right, rather than being influenced by personal interests or external pressures,” he says.
“I intend to build a team focused on resolving issues for the people of Region E in a timely manner.”
His commitment to fair and impartial leadership is commendable, as it typically leads to more transparent and equitable governance.
Makgafela grew up in the majestic city of Polokwane, in the northern province of Limpopo, in a village called Ga-Thaba. He relocated to Johannesburg, where he obtained a Master’s degree with a full dissertation and achieved significant career success.
He has been employed by the City of Johannesburg for over 10 years and has held various positions, including Deputy Director: Integrated Service Delivery (CRUM) for Region D, Specialist: Joburg City Safety Strategy in the Public Safety Department, and Researcher: Public Safety and Transport Committees in the Office of the Speaker.
Makgafela’s current role as Regional Director for Region E is his most challenging and rewarding yet. It involves leading, directing, and coordinating regional functions, departments, and entities.
His responsibilities also include facilitating citizen engagement and social mobilisation. He will act as the face of the region, providing close contact, interaction, and support to communities and residents.
“My experience within the City has provided me with a strong foundation in research, policy analysis, community consultation, environmental management, GIS projects, development economics, project management, and strategic environmental management and planning,” he says. “These are just some of the skills I will bring to bear in my new role.”
Furthermore, Makgafela emphasises that leadership is about collaboration and inspiring others to excel. “I aim to be a direct and collaborative leader who leads by example, delegates tasks effectively, and ensures my team members feel valued,” he says.
Makgafela’s vision for the next five years is to create a well-run and successful Region E that prioritises its citizens and ensures timely resolution of service delivery issues. He also aspires for Region E to champion a culture of accountability and for its employees to be ambassadors for the region.
