Libraries Unite US: Celebrating South African Library Week

Libraries across the City of Johannesburg came alive with vibrant celebrations for South African Library Week, offering engaging events for people of all ages on 17 March 2025.

Poortjie Library

Poortjie Library hosted a day packed with activities, including storytellers, a magician, and a coding session for young people. Senior citizens participated in mobile literacy workshops, while individuals with disabilities explored Braille tools. The day concluded with food packs distributed to all attendees. Anele Zondo, one of the participants, remarked: “This was such a fun and educational experience. I learned new things and even made new friends!”

Blackheath Library

Blackheath Library organised a book donation drive at Heathway Centre, registered new members, and promoted eResources to connect more people with digital learning opportunities. Zandile Ndhlovu, a new library member, shared: “I had no idea libraries offered so many free resources. I can’t wait to start using them!”

Diepkloof Zone 1 Library

In collaboration with Phakamisa Isizwe Day Care Centre, Diepkloof Zone 1 Library hosted a lively reading session and library tour for young learners, aiming to foster a love for books. Nolwazi Sibanyoni, one of the young participants, exclaimed: “I love books! Today, I found my new favourite story.”

Diepsloot Library

Diepsloot Library welcomed primary school learners for a session focused on the joy of reading. Ward 95 Councillor Julius Maake encouraged the children to embrace books as a source of knowledge. Banele Zwane, one of the learners, said: “Reading helps me dream big. I want to read more and learn new things!”

Diepsloot Library also hosted the Science Scuffle Library Rounds, where BASA Primary School emerged victorious. They will now advance to the zonal rounds, showcasing their knowledge and teamwork in this thrilling educational competition.
