Libraries Celebrate Africa Day With a Focus on Education

Libraries in Region D, Soweto, celebrated Africa Day under the theme “Education Encourages Quality” at Phiri Library on the eve of continental day, 24 May 2024. This event underscored the vital role of education in enhancing the lives of individuals and communities while showcasing Africa’s rich cultural heritage and history.

Region D Manager David Raolane highlighted the significance of Africa Day. “Africa Day is of pivotal importance as it provides all Africans with a platform to celebrate and learn more about the different cultural foundations that exist and the history of their existence.”
The event featured a lecture by Johannes Masenya, Assistant Director from Region B, who emphasised the essential role of African history in the education system. “With education, you can improve the quality of your life, the lives of your family, and how you engage with other people on a daily basis.”
Community member and library patron Bongani Sibeko shared his thoughts on the event’s impact. “Events that provide the youth with the history of Africa contribute positively by stimulating their interest and providing them with knowledge about the origins of different cultural groups found in Africa.”
The celebration saw participation from Sekano-Ntoane Secondary School pupils, who entertained the audience with their performances. The event also featured performances by Amatshitshi and involved social workers, alongside other collaborating organisations. The event was organised in collaboration with Phutang Trust, a valued partner of the library.
The celebration of Africa Day in Region D not only honoured the continent’s rich heritage but also underscored the transformative power of education in fostering a brighter future for all.
